Shutters and Mirrors

He checks his composition one last time, measuring the horizon, ensuring that it is horizontal. Half pressing the shutter, he sees 4 of his focus confirmation lights light up. He exhales, holds his breath for 2 full seconds, then depresses the shutter release the rest of the way.

For 2 and a half milliseconds, he is disconnected from the subject of his photo, the mirror slaps up against the stopper, the shutter curtains open and close within 1/250th of a second, and it’s done. His photo is made, not taken.

In other news, I recently made headlines over at Bayblab for my post on the observable action of evolution concerning the speciation of Helacyton gartleri.

Here’s the quote (with a mis-spelled[1] last name and all):

Ryan DuBois at The Daily Dub gives us a brief overview of HeLa cervical cancer cells and their 1991 designation as their own species, Helacyton gartleri. He uses this as a recent, obvservable example of evolution in action.



[1] Everyone seems to think that the space between “Du” and “Bois” is a typo. It’s not.
