Round Here

Posted by rdub in Music

One thing I’ve always dreamed of is to write and play music. I’ve always known this is what really drives me. I have an album I put together a few years back that I was never really satisfied with — there was something about it that was… someone else. Rushed maybe. Or unduly influenced. And partially cliché. It was as if I started off with a clear direction, and ended up — by introducing other inspired, talented musicians without first knowing and communicating my direction — losing sight of that direction, and settling for a sound that was close, but not quite.

Almost every song I’ve ever heard in my entire life follows that “close, but not quite” pattern — I can usually tell the song is inspired (except for most pop), driven, and passionate, but I can also always tell exactly where the artists compromised for the sake of whatever — be it the label, the “demographic,” or the genre (which I’ve always felt was a stifling way of pigeon holing music). Somehow, that compromise always shines through, nearly as much as the artistic expression.

Tonight, that all changed.

The counting crows put on an amazing show tonight. The opening song was a cross between Broadway and Radio City. I’ve never seen such an amazing display of human emotion, passion, and feeling — especially not one so powerful, moving, and free as tonight. It felt as if the inspiration just came to him then and there, and his entire band had the passion and the presence to mirror his every feeling — completely in the moment and energized.

They opened with “Round Here,” in such a way as to blend the feeling of a musical — with all the grandiose movement, physical expression, and musical cadenza — with a progressive rock concert, rife with complex meters, dramatic chord changes, and loud, talented musicianship.

That complete disregard for the rules — that radical, musical self expression — That is what I want to do.

Rule 240? No dice.

I called up continental. Every flight into and out of Houston, Texas prior to 2pm was unconditionally canceled. This includes my flight. Unfortunately, since the cause was weather (as opposed to overbooking, mechanical malfunction, etc.), Rule 240 does not apply – so I had no dice getting my Continental fare transferred to another airline that didn’t have to go through Houston.

Eventually, they found a flight. 3pm departure from Indy, 8:06pm arrival in SJC. This is a 9 hour delay from my original arrival time. Very, very no bueno.

So, I took the flight as a contingency, and immediately loaded up Travelocity.com (shameless plug – thanks guys!), and booked a US Airways flight from Indy to Charlotte (wrong way!) to SJC, leaving and arriving only 1 hour later than my original flight.

Diving catch number 67 of this god-forsaken trip.

I need a new personal adviser to tell me “hey, dip shit. Don’t fly to the east coast (/mid west) just before a hurricane hits the gulf coast.

Especially when the words Houston, Texas are printed all over your itinerary.

In order to come home tomorrow, I fly through Houston, Texas tomorrow. Unfortunately, so does Hurricane Ike.

One of us needs to change plans…

Word’s in we wont have the trophy girls until 1. Good thing we rushed to get here by 10am, since we have nothing to shoot! Apparently, their shirts had a logo issue – some one nit picked the logo and had new shirts made.

That leaves me plenty of time to work on day-job stuff.

Indy: Day 2 (recap)

We shot 445 photos, got 437 successful barcodes scans. Of that 437, 436 matched with my software – that’s a 99.77% success rate, which I think is pretty damn good. Even if you factor in the images we didn’t scan (including the half that were test shots), that’s still 98.2% success rate.

Not bad for 3 hours’ work. Did I mention I also performed my duties at my day job at the same time? Yea, I rock like that.

Here’s the production shots from the day (not the podium shots):

Looking forward, tomorrow should be fun. The forecast calls for rain – all … fucking … day … And I didn’t bring a poncho or rain coat. All I have is a zip sweater thing from North Face – while it’ll keep me warm, it definitely wont keep me dry.

Tomorrow should be fun.
